History of slot machines
- In 1895 Charles Fey, an American, developed the first
slot machine, a one-arm bandid. Herbert S. Mills started
manufacture of the “bandits” and slot machines
were also imported to Europe.
- The first slot machine to be used in Finland was the
Bajazzo, a machine which tested the player’s skill
and was imported from Germany in the mid 1920s. It took
its name from the Italian word pagliaccio (jester), and
the aim was to land a ball in the jester’s hat.
- Manufacture of slot machines in Finland was started
in 1929. The first slot machine was a Payazzo machine with
five columns of coins.
- The first fruit machines arrived in Finland in the
1960s, being introduced first on passenger ships and later
in pubs, restaurants and clubs, and in arcades at amusement
parks.
- RAY manufactured its first electronic
slot machine in 1980.
